Adani Power Stock: Is the Growth Story Still Strong in 2026?

India's electricity story is becoming bigger every year. Data centres, manufacturing, electric vehicles, urbanisation and rising household consumption are all adding to the country's power requirements.

The Central Electricity Authority has projected India's peak electricity demand at 277.2 GW and energy requirement at 1,907.8 billion units for FY2026-27. More recently, ICRA estimated FY2027 electricity-demand growth at around 6.5%, with thermal plant utilisation expected to remain around 66–68%.

That creates an interesting backdrop for Adani Power Ltd (ADANIPOWER).

Adani Power is India's largest private-sector thermal power producer, with 18,290 MW of installed thermal capacity across 13 plants, plus a 40 MW solar plant in Gujarat, according to the company's latest disclosure.

But the bigger question for investors is simple: Can Adani Power turn India's rising electricity demand into sustainable earnings growth without taking on excessive financial and execution risk?

Adani Power Business: How Does It Make Money?

At its core, Adani Power generates electricity and sells it to customers through a combination of long-term contracts and shorter-term or merchant markets.

One important part of the business is the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). A PPA is essentially a contract under which a buyer agrees to purchase electricity under agreed terms. Long-term PPAs can provide better revenue visibility compared with relying entirely on volatile spot-market prices.

Adani Power has been increasing the portion of its capacity covered by long-term arrangements. The company said in July 2026 that 56% of its upcoming capacity had already been tied up under long-term PPAs through its development model.

The company also expanded its portfolio during Q1 FY27 through the acquisition of assets connected with Jaiprakash Associates, including the 180 MW Churk plant and stakes in Jaiprakash Power Ventures and Prayagraj Power Generation Company.

Adani Power Financial Results: What Do the Numbers Say?

The latest reported quarter is Q1 FY27, ended June 30, 2026, announced on July 22, 2026.

The headline numbers were strong.

There is an important detail here.

Adani Power recognised ₹1,386 crore of prior-period income during the quarter, compared with ₹406 crore in Q1 FY26. Therefore, investors should not simply treat the reported 47% PAT growth as recurring operating growth. The continuing EBITDA figure of ₹6,983 crore gives a cleaner picture of the underlying business performance.

Power generation reached a record 31 billion units, while power dispatch/sales reached 28.8 billion units.

The company said higher demand, increased operating capacity and better tariff realisation supported the improvement. However, fuel costs also increased substantially, rising about 30% year-on-year to ₹9,512.70 crore.

So the takeaway is mixed but encouraging: operating performance improved strongly, but fuel costs remain an important variable.

Adani Power Capacity Expansion: The Big Growth Story

This is arguably the most important part of the Adani Power investment story.

The company is targeting a portfolio of approximately 45 GW of generation capacity. Its current capital-expenditure programme is expected to involve more than ₹2 lakh crore over roughly five years.

Several projects are already progressing.

The 1,320 MW Korba Phase-II project is expected to be commissioned during the current year. The 1,600 MW Mahan Phase-II project was more than 88% complete as of June 30, 2026, with commercial operations scheduled for Q1 FY28.

The 1,600 MW Raipur Phase-II and 1,600 MW Raigarh Phase-II projects were more than 62% and 54% complete respectively, while execution had begun on the 1,600 MW Mirzapur greenfield project.

This expansion could significantly increase Adani Power's generation scale if projects are completed on schedule.

However, expansion also requires money.

Management has indicated that a substantial portion of the expansion will be funded through internal accruals, with additional funding coming from debt and capital markets. The company reported total debt of ₹58,381 crore and net debt of ₹47,643 crore as of June 30, 2026.

Why Investors Are Watching ADANIPOWER

1. India's electricity demand

The long-term demand story remains important. India's economic expansion, cooling requirements, industrialisation, data centres and electrification can all increase electricity consumption.

2. Thermal power remains relevant

Renewables are expanding rapidly, but India's electricity system still needs dependable generation when solar and wind output is insufficient. ICRA expects thermal PLF to remain around 66–68% in FY2027 despite rising renewable generation.

3. Capacity additions

If Adani Power successfully commissions its planned projects, the company could have a much larger earnings base in future years.

4. PPAs

Long-term PPAs can provide greater revenue visibility. This becomes particularly useful when compared with completely merchant-based generation, where electricity prices can fluctuate significantly.

5. Operating performance

The Q1 FY27 numbers showed that higher volumes and better realisations can translate into strong EBITDA and profit growth.

Adani Power Stock Risks Investors Should Not Ignore

A strong business story does not automatically mean a low-risk stock.

Fuel costs: Imported coal prices and other fuel costs can affect margins. Q1 FY27 demonstrated this clearly, with fuel costs rising around 30%.

Large capex: A ₹2 lakh crore expansion programme is enormous. Delays, cost overruns or weaker-than-expected returns could affect future cash flows.

Debt: Although management has emphasised conservative capital management, total debt increased from ₹53,556 crore at March 31, 2026 to ₹58,381 crore at June 30, 2026.

Regulatory risk: Electricity tariffs, environmental rules, coal policies and regulatory decisions can influence the economics of power projects.

Merchant power prices: Electricity sold outside long-term PPAs can experience price volatility.

Energy transition: India is rapidly adding solar, wind, storage and other cleaner sources. Thermal power is expected to remain important, but investors should recognise that the energy mix is changing. Recent data also shows renewable generation beginning to offset some coal-generation growth.

Group-related sentiment: Adani Group companies can experience significant market-price volatility based on broader group sentiment, even when individual operating results remain strong.

Adani Power Valuation: Is the Stock Expensive?

As of the September 4, 2026 close, Adani Power was around ₹207.20, with a market capitalisation of approximately ₹3.996 lakh crore.

Moneycontrol reported a TTM EPS of ₹7.39, TTM P/E of about 28.04, and P/B of approximately 5.74.

That valuation deserves attention.

For context, NTPC was trading at around 11.6x TTM earnings and 1.54x book value on September 4, according to Moneycontrol.

This does not automatically mean Adani Power is expensive or NTPC is cheap. The companies have different growth profiles, business mixes and capital-allocation strategies.

It does, however, show that the market is assigning Adani Power a considerably higher valuation multiple. Investors therefore need future earnings growth to justify that premium.

I could not verify a sufficiently reliable current EV/EBITDA figure for Adani Power from the sources checked, so I have deliberately not included one rather than guessing.

Growth Catalysts vs Potential Risks

Growth CatalystsPotential Risks
Rising Indian power demandFuel-price volatility
Capacity expansionHigh capital expenditure
Long-term PPAsRegulatory changes
Higher power salesProject execution delays
Improving operationsValuation risk
Thermal power demandEnergy-transition risk

The biggest opportunity is scale: successful execution could substantially increase Adani Power's operating capacity and earnings base.

The biggest question is execution. Investors need to watch whether new capacity comes online on time and whether the additional earnings justify the capital invested.

Adani Power Stock Future Outlook

The near-term picture looks operationally strong, but investors should avoid looking at one quarter in isolation.

Over the next few quarters, watch Adani Power results, capacity additions, plant utilisation, debt, cash flow, fuel costs and PPA coverage.

Management's progress toward the 45 GW target will be particularly important. The company says 87% of upcoming capacity has received environmental clearance and 56% has already been tied up under long-term PPAs.

From a beginner's perspective, the investment case can be viewed in two parts.

The bull case is that India's electricity demand remains strong, Adani Power executes its expansion programme, operating efficiency stays healthy and new capacity produces attractive returns.

The bear case is that high valuation, fuel-price pressure, debt-funded expansion, execution risks or changing electricity-market conditions reduce the returns investors expect.

Final Verdict: Is Adani Power Still a Growth Story?

Adani Power enters FY2027 with a powerful combination of rising electricity demand, strong recent operating performance and an ambitious capacity-expansion programme.

The Q1 FY27 results were impressive, particularly the 21.6% growth in continuing EBITDA and 47.2% increase in reported PAT. But investors should remember that part of the reported profit growth was helped by prior-period income recognition.

The stock also trades at a much higher valuation than some established power-sector peers such as NTPC. That means future execution and earnings growth matter enormously.

For investors comfortable with higher volatility and willing to take a long-term view, ADANIPOWER is a stock worth researching closely. For conservative investors, the valuation, large capex programme, debt and thermal-power exposure deserve careful consideration before making any decision.

The most important lesson is simple: don't buy the story alone. Follow the numbers.

Do your own research and consider your risk tolerance before making any investment decision.
